Note: TTY is an abbreviation that refers to all types of teletypewriters. TTY mode relates to mobile phones. Teletypewriters are ancient technology, but they have been modified for new media to continue providing accessibility features to hearing impaired or speech impaired individuals. The FCC mandated that cellphones be compatible with teletypewriters to maintain connectivity as much as possible, regardless of accessibility requirements; hence TTY mode.
Originally, teletypewriters were used in newsrooms before the age of cellphones and the Internet. They would sit in a row, chattering away as they printed and produced quite a lot of noise.
Messages could be sent from one end of the country to the other using the existing telephone network. While the internet, email, and mobile phones took over, teletypewriters took a back seat. They are now used almost exclusively for the hearing or speech impaired. A TTY device is like a typewriter that contains a small display screen.
The device connects to a compatible cellphone using a TTY cable and will essentially act as a short message service SMS device. You type your message on the teletypewriter and check it on the screen.
Once submitted, it is passed to the phone over the TTY cable and sent via your carrier. The receiving end will get the message and either read it directly on the phone or via their teletypewriter. TTY mode is a legacy technology, and many hearing or speech impaired people can utilize SMS to communicate.
There are also real-time IP technologies to make communication more accessible, but these require either a data plan or a digital telephone line. TTY mode has been maintained for those who have no access to mobile data or are restricted to analog phone lines.
If you have a compatible handset, using TTY mode is simple.Real-time text RTT lets you use text to communicate during a phone call. To facilitate easy back and forth communication, users of TTY have developed some shorthand. It functions much like saying "Over" in radio communication, indicating that you have stopped and are waiting for a response. When placing a call, wait at least seven rings for an answer, since a hearing-impaired person may take longer to notice an incoming call.
A typical greeting when a hearing-impaired person answers is "GA. End a call with "SK" to indicate that you've "stopped keying" on your side. By : James T Wood September 28, Share Share on Facebook.

Use real-time text (RTT) with calls
I have a vague idea of how TTY works. When I tried calling their TTY number, the app just acted as if it was an ordinary phone call playing the droning, dial-up-like noise you'd expect is actually transmitted. At no point of time did I get to communicate with text as I expected. Please help. How do I use TTY mode? I think the idea is you plug your TTY terminal into the phone's headset jack.

Replies: 2 Views: Discussion in ' Android Support ' started by tgbrowningFeb 15, I'm sure most users have gone through the different settings and at least seen the one that mentions TTY support, From everything I've been able to glean from various sources, this support is native to the Android OS since at least 2.
However, I have never seen an app that makes use of it. Why is that? From everything I've been able to learn from Verizon, the TTY support mentioned is only for connecting a droid to a TTY device that must be connected to a telephone in order to the make the call.
The TTY merely translates the input it gets from a user via a keyboard or microphone to baudot for transmission. All in all, it's ridiculous. Why can't a user just use the damn phone itself, I'm deaf, so this is hardly an idle question for me.
Who or where should I go to investigate this? Is there a group or forum that might be of help in getting such an app written? This is an update on the TTY support on Android phones.
How to Enable or Disable TTY Mode in Android Smartphones?
I found an app that does pretty much what I've been talking about albeit in a different way. Instead of going through a vco-relay operator, the app applies some of the android OS for voice recognition and throws it on a screen on the phone. It's a bit buggy, but when you consider what it's doing, marvelous. It is available from Sprint working in conjuncture with a developer called, I think, Captel. Go to the Market and check it.
Also, be advised that it requires the Adobe AIR app to to be loaded and working. Folks, you could do the deaf community a great service by spending some time with this app and seeing if you can figure out what is working, what isn't, and what is almost there. Even more importantly, this should be talked up by the hearing to make it much more well known.
